Plant still being considered

29 December 2001

During a visit to Japan, Konstantin Pulikovsky, the Russian representative in the Far Eastern Federal District, has raised the possibility of building a nuclear plant on the Kurile islands to supply power to both the islands and Japan. Nuclear energy minister Yevgeny Adamov said this would be desirable for Japan, which has little land available for construction of nuclear facilities. Furthermore, building a plant in Russia costs 75% less than in Japan.

Power deliveries could be a guarantee for returning Japanese investments.
