NNC acquires OPG safety analysis unit

3 November 2002

NNC has acquired Ontario Power Generation's (OPG's) Nuclear Safety Analysis Division and is to set up a new wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary, Nuclear Safety Solutions.

Ron Osborne, president and CEO of OPG, said: "We were one of the few nuclear operators to rely on in-house services for nuclear safety analysis and have concluded that it would be advantageous to combine forces with an established international nuclear technology company." Since Bruce Power took over OPG's Bruce reactors in early 2001, NNC has won all ten of the safety-related contracts that have been competitively tendered. OPG said this success and NNC's international reputation were the reasons the company was selected as preferred bidder to take over OPG's staff.

Nuclear Safety Solutions will have 150 staff from OPG. OPG said the deal would enable it to obtain services from a leading provider while maintaining a "smart buyer" core capability.
