South Korea's Ulchin and Yonggwang nuclear power plants have been renamed, to maintain a good relationship with the public, operator Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has said.
From now on the six-unit Yonggwang nuclear power plant in South Jeolla province will be known as Hanbit, and the Ulchin nuclear plant in North Gyeongsang province has been renamed Hanul. Two APR-1400 reactors that were planned for construction at the Ulchin site will now be known as Shin-Hanul 1&2, rather than Shin-Ulchin.
KHNP told NEI "We changed the name of plants on 7 May 2013 because of residents' demands."
Fishermen near both units had been calling for the facilities to be renamed, claiming that problems at the plants had led to a drop in their sales.
"We accepted the requests to maintain good relations with residents," KHNP said.
