New experimental reactor starts up

China’s HTR-10, an experimnetal high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR), achieved criticality just before Christmas. It is located at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, and is a key project in China’s R&D programme to develop a modular HTGR similar to Eskom’s Pebble Bed Reactor.
