More money to shelter

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has said that pledges totalling $200 million were made at the donor meeting held in London, UK last month for the Chernobyl Shelter Fund, which it manages. The European Union (EU) and G8 countries offered $185 million of this money, with Russia contributing for the first time. The Ukraine government pledged $22 million in local currency.

The fund has been set up convert the destroyed unit 4 at Chernobyl into an environmentally safe site. The completion date for the project is 2009.
