MHI wins design and procurement contract for PBMR

7 December 2005

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has received two orders from South Africa’s PBMR company related to the core barrel assembly (CBA) of the demonstration pebble bed modular reactor power plant.

One contract will see MHI develop the basic design of the CBA, an integral component of the reactor pressure vessel, the other is for the provision of forgings and procurement of other items for the CBA. The contracts are collectively worth approximately $15 million.

The components will be used in a demonstration unit that PBMR is scheduled to start constructing in 2007 for delivery in 2011.

The basic design is slated for completion in December 2006 and MHI expects to sign a second series of contracts for the detailed design work of the CBA and production of various other components for the 165MWe demonstration unit in the same year.
