Low-cost replacement for liquid nitrogen

29 November 2000

Perkin Elmer Products has found a mechanical alternative to liquid nitrogen for cooling high purity germanium detectors (HPGe), that it says will be no more expensive than the traditional LN2 dewar and cryostat. The X-Cooler will be available with new HPGe detectors from the company and can be retrofitted to existing Ortec PopTop detectors. It will replace LN2 cooling for standard applications in analytical laboratories, environmental monitors and process monitors.
