Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has awarded KEPCO E&C a contract to provide complementary design and licensing support for the APR1400 design certification by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The contract is worth 49.1 billion won ($47 million) and runs from 26 August 2014 to end October 2017, according to KEPCO.
In 2013, the NRC decided not to accept KHNP's application for certification of its APR1400 reactor design, because it contained insufficient information in some areas.
As part of the new project KHNP aims to reapply for an APR1400 design certification at the end of 2014 by "complementing the licensing documents in accordance with NRC's review and recently revised NRC nuclear safety criteria."
Afterwards, it will be responsible for complementary design and responding to NRC's Request for Additional Information on the licensing document.
KEPCO said the project will be undertaken by working closely with KEPCO, KHNP, KNFC, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, with cost-sharing by each player.
