IAEA trials new technology to fight proliferation

18 August 2005

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is trialling technology that will enable the remote monitoring of sensitive nuclear materials to ensure they are not diverted to non-peaceful uses. Images taken every five minutes and electronic seal data will be downloaded daily from new monitors, via satellite feeds, to agency computer systems, which encrypts and authenticates the information, before sending it to IAEA headquarters in Vienna. The agency is trialling the technology at Mochovce nuclear power plant, Slovakia.
