A disaster-resistant, steel-reinforced concrete storage dome that is able to withstand 360 mph winds, event driven missiles and seismic forces, has been completed at Dominion's North Anna Power Station in Louisa County, Virginia.
The dome was developed by a US-based alliance of American Business Continuity Domes, Inc. and Dome Technology, and was engineered by Engineering System Solutions (ES2), under the supervision of Dominion's engineering team.
It is a 10,387 square foot facility, 120 feet in diameter, 38 feet tall and features two hardened equipment doors.
The facility was commissioned in accordance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) response to the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan and its order with specific requirements for mitigation strategies for beyond-design basis external events. (See also Developing the FLEX plan)
In addition to North Anna, the ABC Domes team is working on two other dome projects for Dominion. The domes at Millstone Power Station in New London County, Connecticut and Surry Power Station in Surry County, Virginia are scheduled for completion in October and December of 2014, respectively. The team also has seven other Fukushima Flex domes under development for two other US utility companies.
