'Eco-bishop' out

25 October 2004

The Right Reverend Hugh Montefiore, the former bishop of Birmingham, UK, has been ejected from the board of environmental group Friends of The Earth for writing that nuclear power should be used to reduce carbon emissions. He was told that such an opinion is "not compatible" with his role as trustee of the group, which he has held for 20 years, but insists that "the future of the planet is more important than membership of Friends of the Earth."
