DrumScan supplied to NESCA

29 June 2001

BNFL Instruments has supplied a DrumScan system to NESCA (formerly the Atomic Energy Corporation of South Africa). The system is licensed by the regulator to assay a number of waste streams at NESCA’s Pelindaba site just north of Johannesburg.

To date over 3500 drums have been classified and categorised for disposal by the DrumScan, which integrates with a conveyor incorporating a drum painting system sourced by NESCA. Drum painting allows easier visual recognition of the disposal route.

To improve data storage the DrumScan system is also equipped with a bar code reader allowing measurement and characterisation results to be integrated with NESCA’s centrally controlled database network.
