Copper to guard waste

6 March 2001

The canisters, made of oxygen-free copper, will have a guaranteed life of 100,000 years and an expected endurance of much more.

The initial phase of the programme involves some 4000 casks, each of 15 tonnes and holding 2 tonnes of spent fuel.
