Contract for Lianyungang

The China Nuclear Industry Huaxing Construction Co has signed the contract for civil engineering work on nuclear island No 1 of the Lianyungang Nuclear Power Plant being built with Russian help in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province. The plant will have two 1000 MWe VVER units; work on Unit 1 is expected to begin in October and to take just over five years to complete. The unit is scheduled to be operational by 2004.

Russia will carry out 80% of the first phase of construction according to equipment supplier, Izhora Works in St Petersburg. The factory will supply the main reactor; concrete shafts; pressure compensator; pipes; water based emergency cooling systems; steam generator bodies; and equipment for dealing with radioactive material.
