During the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) held in Dubai, Yu Jianfeng, Chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) held talks with Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC). The two also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on joint development and investment in nuclear energy projects in third countries.
Yu informed Hammadi about the latest developments in China's nuclear energy industry . He noted that CNNC will fully leverage its advantages and experience in nuclear power construction, together with the UAE, to support countries and regions in achieving a low-carbon transformation, contributing to local sustainable development. Hammadi welcomed cooperation with China and emphasised that nuclear energy collaboration in third countries is crucial for addressing global climate change. He also highlighted the significant role of nuclear energy technology in decarbonisation of industries such as oil and gas.
During his visit to the UAE, Yu also held discussions with subsidiaries of CNNC recognising the achievement of employees, in exploring UAE and Middle Eastern markets. He pointed out that international operations are crucial support for the development of CNNC, and all units should attach great importance to it. He also emphasised the importance of strictly adhering to local laws and ensuring safety in order to promote a positive image for Chinese enterprises.
Yu also held talks with Ghana’s Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh during which a consensus was reached on broader cooperation. The two reviewed the successful experiences of collaboration in microreactor projects and the conversion of miniature neutron source reactors. They also discussed their shared vision for further nuclear cooperation.
During a meeting with World Nuclear Association (WNA) Director General Sama Bilbao y León, Yu invited León to visit China and expressed the hope for further collaboration and exchange in areas such as human resources and policy research.
