Chernobyl professor released

18 August 2005

The release from a Belarus jail of a local professor specialising in the Chernobyl disaster has been welcomed by the European Union (EU), which had pressed for his freedom.

A political prisoner of Belarus’ authoritarian regime, Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky was in “good spirits and good health and eager to continue his research,” said the EU. He should now participate in an April 2006 conference marking the disaster’s 20th anniversary, in Minsk, Belarus’ capital.
