Bruce Power and GE Vernova’s Steam Power sign strategic supplier agreement

12 March 2024

Bruce Power and GE Vernova’s Steam Power business have entered into a strategic supplier agreement that will see the companies continue to work together to provide safe and clean electricity to Ontario.

The agreement further advances a mutually beneficial business relationship in the form of a performance-based, co-operative strategic alliance, utilising GE Vernova’s core competencies in turbine and generator parts, inspection, and maintenance. This outage and project work will optimise the performance of Bruce Power’s units and support its ongoing Life-Extension Program over the next decade.

“This strategic alliance agreement creates synergies between both organisations and enhances capabilities and predictability through a collaborative approach,” said David Furr, Bruce Power’s Vice-President for Supply Chain.

Bruce Power and GE Vernova’s Steam Power business said they share a commitment to maintaining the highest operational standards, while ensuring the delivery of reliable and sustainable energy solutions to customers and shareholders to not only redefine industry benchmarks, but also pave the way for future collaborations and innovations that will drive positive change in the global energy sector.

“We have built this relationship on common goals – creating a unique opportunity to drive synergies and predictability through long-term planning. This strategic alliance is emblematic of our commitment to decarbonising while electrifying,” said Tim Anderson, GE Vernova’s Steam Power Nuclear Sales Executive.

The eight pressurised heavy-water Candu reactor units at the Bruce site in Ontario (Bruce A – units 1-4, and Bruce B – units 4-8) began commercial operation between 1977 and 1987. Bruce Power’s CAD13bn ($10bn) Life Extension Programme, which includes Asset Management and MCR, began in 2016. MCR, which began with unit 6 and also includes units 3-8, will extend the life of the site until 2064. Units 1&2 have already been refurbished and were returned to service in 2012. Work began on unit 3 in March and progressing on schedule using innovation and efficiencies gained in unit 6.
