Braidwood 2 sets US refuelling record

29 November 2000

Exelon Nuclear’s Braidwood 2 nuclear plant in Illinois completed a record-setting refuelling outage on 5 November. The 1175MW PWR was off-line for refuelling for only 15 days, 16 hours, and 45 minutes. This bettered the previous US refuelling record of 17 days, 14 hours, set at the South Texas Project 2 reactor.

Exelon is the name of the new company formed by the merger of Unicom Corp in Chicago and PECO Energy in Philadelphia, which was finalised on 20 October. The combined company is the largest operator of nuclear plants in the USA, with 17 operating nuclear units.
