Automation contract for Hanhikivi

8 June 2017

UK-based Rolls-Royce and France's Schneider Electric have been picked as preferred suppliers for the design and delivery of the automation systems for the Hanhikivi 1 project in Finland.

Rolls-Royce would be the leading supplier, providing the protection automation. Schneider Electric would be the operational I&C systems provider. The deal, which is subject to final contract negotiations, is expected to be valued at hundreds of millions of euros.

Fennovoima, which is building the VVER-1200 unit, said the selection of automation providers is important for the progression of the nuclear power plant’s design work and licensing.

The automation system monitors, controls and protects the operation of the plant’s reactor, systems and equipment. The protection automation detects abnormalities in the functioning of the nuclear reactor and systems and initiates necessary protective measures.

The Pyhäjoki nuclear power plant is expected to start construction in 2018 and be completed in 2024. At the moment, preparatory work for the is underway.
