Australian Labor MPs urge party review of nuclear policy

21 September 2005

Vince Catania and Shelley Archer, two Labor MPs representing Western Australia, have called upon the party leadership to review its policy regarding uranium and nuclear power.

The backbenchers have labelled their party's ban on uranium mining outdated and called for a committee to examine nuclear power as an alternative energy source for Western Australia.

"We need to go that next step and put our money where our mouth is and do an in-depth study into power - not just nuclear but all forms of power," said Catania to local media. Archer added that there was a lot of support within Labor for an examination of uranium mining and nuclear and other power sources.

The moves come as uranium rich Western Australia considers the rapidly rising prices of uranium in the face of its 20 year old policy limiting its exploitation.
