A survey of the systems, structures and components at unit 2 of the Armenian NPP has been completed in preparation of extension of its service life, Russia's Rusatom Service said on 10 February. T
he current design life of the unit expires this year. A total of 4,500 systems, structures and components were surveyed, including generators and related equipment, turbine, pumps etc. The work was undertaken by 15 subcontracters, including Atomtekhenergo, OKB Gidropress, NIAEP, All Russian Scientific & Research Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Operation (VNIIAES), the Federal Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (FCNRS), the Central Design Bureau of Machine Engineering, the Orgenergostroy Institute and Power Machines.
Fifteen specific reports were prepared and approved, based on the results of the survey, and these will be the basis for drafting a general report and programme for life extension. The contract between Rusatom Service and the Armenian NPP related to the provision of services and delivery of goods for the extension project was signed in July 2015. Russia has provided a state export loan of $270m and a grant of $30m to support the work.
Meanwhile, a plan for the construction of a new nuclear unit has been submitted to the government for consideration. According to the plan, construction will begin in 2018 for start up in 2026. However, it is not clear how the project will be financed.
