UK NIA seeks assurances on Brexit

The UK Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) on 31 March called for arrangements to be put in place to avoid disruption to the nuclear energy sector following the initiation of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit). NIA CEO Tom Greatrex wants Theresa May’s Conservative government to put together a working group to look at the impact Brexit on the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). “The NIA has called for transitional arrangements to be put into place to avoid undue disruption to industry and has urged the Government to convene a working group to analyse the full impact of leaving Euratom,” he said. “The nuclear industry is global, so the ease of movement of nuclear goods, people and services is important to enable new build, decommissioning, R&D and other programmes of work to continue without interruption.” The NIA represents more than 260 companies including nuclear power station operators, new build developers and vendors, those engaged in decommissioning, waste management, all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, supply chain and consultancy companies.

EDF ready for final investment decision on Hinkley

A consultation with EDF's Central Works Council on 4 July has cleared the way for a final investment decision (FID) to be made on construction of the Hinkley Point C NPP in the UK. The plant is scheduled to begin operating in 2025,and under a deal agreed last October, China General Nuclear (CGN) will take a 33.5% stake in the project. In addition, the two companies plan to develop projects to build new plants at Sizewell in Suffolk and Bradwell in Essex, the latter using Chinese reactor technology.

UK remains committed to nuclear despite Brexit

The UK's Nuclear Industry Association and the French Nuclear Society, SFEN, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, committing them to work together to further the nuclear sector in both the UK and France. The agreement, signed by NIA chief executive, Tom Greatrex, and Christophe Béhar, President of SFEN, recognises the importance of nuclear energy for sustainable development and the need for continued co-operation between UK and French industries as new nuclear generation is developed in Europe, the NIA said. Greatrex added: "While the referendum last week signalled that the UK will begin the process of leaving the European Union, it certainly does not mean the end of cooperation between the UK and EU member states."
