DOE awards $1.3bn contract for WIPP operation

Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC has been awarded a $1.3 billion contract for the management and operation of the US Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

The three-member consortium comprising URS Energy & Construction, Inc., Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc., and major subcontractor, AREVA Federal Services LLC, will assume responsibility for management and operation of WIPP on 1 October 2012 for a five-year period. There is an option to extend the contract for an additional five years.

WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico is a deep geological disposal facility for US defense-related transuraniuc (TRU) waste. It began accepting waste in 1999. WIPP is currently operated by Washington TRU Solutions.
