Areva says more I&C answers by year end

5 November 2009

France-based EPR developer Areva has spoken out about the instrumentation and control queries in the reactor design raised by the nuclear safety operations of Finland, the UK and France.

It said: 'This constant dialog between operators, constructors and nuclear safety authorities is an integral part of the certification and construction processes for new reactors. The safety of the EPR reactor has not been called into question and Areva is currently working with the regulators in each country to make the necessary adaptations to meet local standards."

It said that the Finnish regulator STUK first raised queries in December 2008; since then the UK's HSE and, in October, France's ASN have as well. It said that it would supply answers to ASN by the end of the year.

It concludes: "Areva guarantees the safety of its reactor and welcomes the approach made by the safety authorities to introduce a global standardization for its I&C model."
