Five companies shortlisted for Belene NPP

Five companies have been shortlisted for negotiations on the 2,000 MWe Belene Nuclear Power Plant project, Bulgarian Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova told Parliament’s Energy Committee on 19 December. The shortlisted candidates are: China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Russia's Atomenergoprom, a subsidiary state nuclear corporation Rosatom, France's Framatome and US-based General Electric (GE), the energy ministry said in a statement. Invitations for submitting binding offers will be sent to the shortlisted candidates by the end of January 2020.

Assystem wins contracts for UK’s STEP fusion project

Assystem’s Sunderland engineering team will lead two crucial aspects of the UK’s STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) fusion project – Breeder Blanket and Materials Database, Assystem said on 20 December. STEP is being designed at the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA’s) site at Culham in Oxfordshire. Assystem’s team of engineers will be contributing from their bases in Sunderland, Derby and Blackburn. Assystemhas experience delivering fusion projects including leading the design of the Divertor Remote Handling System (DRHS) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), under construction in France. The DRHS is a robotic arm that can operate inside the extremely hot environment of the fusion reactor.

Unit 2 of Russia’s Kola NPP on 20 December received a licence from the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) allowing it to operate for another 15 years until 2034.

Russia’s floating NPP generates its first electricity

Russia's Akademik Lomonosov, the world's first industrial floating NPP (FNPP) began producing electricity on 19 December. The FNPP transmitted its first electric energy to the isolated network of Chaun-Bilibino junction of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in the city of Pevek," according to nuclear utility Rosenergoatom, part of state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Rosenergoatom added that Akademik Lomonosov would be connected to Pevek's heating networks and be put into industrial operation in 2020.

Further delays for OL3

Commissioning of unit 3 at Finland’s Olkiluoto NPP (OL3), has been pushed back to March 2021 by suppliers France’s Areva and Germany’s Siemens, plant operator TVO said on 19 December. According to the information received by TVO, nuclear fuel will be loaded into the OL3 EPR unit reactor in June 2020, the first connection to the grid will take place in November 2020, and the start of regular electricity production will take place in March 2021.

State funding for Russia’s MBIR reactor

Russian State Development Corporation VEB.RF and Gazprombank will finance construction of the MBIR multipurpose fast neutron research reactor being built in at the Russian Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad to the tune of RUB80 billion ($1.27bn), Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told a meeting of the VEB.RF supervisory board on 13 December.

US DOE awards clean-up contracts for Hanford site

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a new Hanford environmental cleanup contract worth up to $10 billion over ten years. The winning bidder for the new Hanford Central Plateau Cleanup Contract is a the Central Plateau Cleanup Co comprising Aecom Management Services (Maryland), Fluor Federal Services (South Carolina) and Atkins Nuclear Secured (Tennessee).

Unit 5 of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear plant has now been fully loaded with Westinghouse fuel (TVS-WR), nuclear utility Energoatom announced on 12 December.
