Licence renewal for US South Texas Project

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed the licence for the South Texas Project, a nuclear power plant near Bay City, for an additional 20 years.

NRG continues project on graphite ageing in AGRs

A new irradiation capsule for accelerated ageing of graphite, which is used in Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs), has begun irradiation at NRG’s High Flux Reactor in Petten in the Netherlands. NRG said on 12 September that the irradiation had started two months ahead of schedule. The work is part of Project Blackstone, initiated by an alliance of EDF Energy, NRG, Frazer Nash Consultancy and Atkins in support of ageing management of AGR reactors in the UK. The project will run for four more years and is expected to provide data that can be used in safety cases to support AGR plant operating life extensions. NRG said the online monitoring results demonstrate excellent control of the irradiation conditions.

NRG begins testing special steel for Iter

NRG of the Netherlands said on 25 January that it has started irradiation testing Eurofer97 low-activation stainless steel that will be used in the Iter nuclear fusion reactor under construction at Cadarache in southern France.

NRG completes graphite study for EDF Energy

The Netherlands-based Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) has announced the successful completion of a programme in which EDF Energy studied the effects of irradiation creep on graphite – the process which causes graphite to change in dimensions and properties when irradiated and subjected to a load at high temperature.
