US says it has adequate supplies of Mo-99 made without HEU

US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm and US Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra jointly certified in December that there is now enough worldwide supply of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) made without using highly enriched uranium (HEU) to meet the needs of patients in the USA.

US National Labs recycle radioactive source

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) reported on 10 August that collaboration between National Laboratories had resulted in the reuse of a radioactive source. An EM programme at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site has taken the “reduce, reuse, and recycle” concept to the next level by sending a legacy radioactive source to another DOE site for reuse, it said.

General Atomics marks completion of first central solenoid module for ITER

US-based General Atomics (GA) on10 August marked the completion and shipment of the first Central Solenoid module for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) under construction in Saint-Paul-lès-Durance in southern France, with a celebration at the firm’s Magnet Technologies Centre (MTC) in California. The module recently arrived in France after being shipped from the MTC in late June and is scheduled to reach the ITER site in the coming weeks. Five additional modules, plus one spare, are at various stages of fabrication, with the second module expected to ship this month. The Central Solenoid will be assembled as the modules arrive on site and is scheduled to be fully installed in 2023-24. ITER is scheduled to begin its first plasma operations in 2025.

X-energy expands TRISO-X to commercialise its advanced nuclear fuel

US-based X-energy announced on 9 August that it will expand its fuel division as a wholly owned subsidiary called TRISO-X to commercially develop its proprietary tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel for the burgeoning advanced nuclear energy sector. Dr Pete Pappano, X-energy’s Vice President of fuel production, will lead the new company as its President. Since joining X-energy in 2015, Dr Pappano has been instrumental in supporting the company’s ability to produce advanced nuclear fuel at a commercial scale. As the leader of X-energy’s ARC15 project, a five-year programme funded by the Department of Energy, he established a commercial-scale fuel line at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has demonstrated the company’s patented TRISO fabrication process leading to higher yields and higher quality fuel.

Canada Strengthens Nuclear Collaboration with Romania

Canada’s Department of Natural Resources on 5 August announced that Romania had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Canada committing the two countries to strengthening cooperation on nuclear energy, including collaboration on Candu refurbishments and new build projects in Romania.

Helion prepares to build Polaris fusion prototype
03 August, 2021
US fusion energy developer Helion Energy said on 27 July that it had broken ground on a new facility in Everett, Washington. “This new facility will focus on helium-3 production and bring more than 150 clean energy jobs to the area,” it noted. The new facility will accelerate Helion’s efforts to build the world’s first commercially-viable fusion power plant, the company noted. The facility will house Helion’s seventh generation fusion prototype, known as Polaris. Construction is expected to be completed in early-2022.
