EDF’s NUWARD SMR to be case study for European regulatory review

EDF has announced that its Small Modular Reactor NUWARD will be the case study for a European early joint regulatory review led by the French Safety Authority (ASN) with the participation of the Czech (SUJB) and Finnish (STUK) safety authorities. EDF said that, by this action, it was fostering European cooperation and supporting the acceleration of international SMR licensing, creating momentum towards harmonisation of SMR regulations.
IAEA to develop roadmap for commercial hydrogen deployment

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 5 May that, to speed up greening of the emerging hydrogen economy, it had launched an initiative to develop a roadmap for the commercial deployment of hydrogen production using nuclear energy. The initiative brings together decision makers, designers, project managers and operators to share the latest advances in national strategies and technologies and to identify technical readiness for different technologies of hydrogen production using nuclear energy. The initiative will culminate in a roadmap guiding document, to provide countries with a tool for evaluating, planning and strategising the development of nuclear hydrogen projects.
EC confirms nuclear and gas as part of European taxonomy

European unions call again for nuclear to be part of the EU taxonomy

European unions on 27 July reiterated calls for the European Commission (EC) to include nuclear power in its green goals. In a joint letter to EC President Ursula von der Leyen, 18 trade unions in the energy sector from 10 countries said nuclear energy must be included in a delegated act of the European taxonomy. The unions -from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, Romania, Sweden, Slovak Republic and Slovenia - called for "a dialogue with the purpose of nuclear energy to play its full potential and build an economically efficient and socially just carbon-free Europe by 2050".
Foratom welcomes EC’s Fit for 55 package

European nuclear trade association Foratom on 14 July welcomed the European Commission’s (EC’s) Fit for 55 package and said it fully supports all proposals which aim to reduce CO2 emissions in line with the Climate Law and Paris Agreement. Foratom noted that the bar has been set very high as it will apply to a broad range of sectors including industry, buildings and transport.
MEPS argue for green nuclear

Some 86 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have sent a letter to the European Commission (EC) calling on Commissioners "to follow the science" and include nuclear under the EU's Sustainable Finance Taxonomy. The MEPs urge them "to choose the path that their scientific experts have now advised them to take", namely to include nuclear power in the EU's Taxonomy on Sustainable Finance. The letter was organised by Swedish MEP Sara Skyttedal, member of the Swedish Christian Democrats and the European People’s Party, and signed by MEPs from 18 countries across the political spectrum.

European nuclear trade association Foratom on 14 June released a position paper on, “Medical Uses of Nuclear Technology Role, Challenges & Perspectives”, urging the European Union (EU) to promote new research reactor capacity along with innovation in the sector and the design modification of the current fleet. The 24-page paper, issued jointly with Nuclear Medicine Europe, made a number of recommendations aimed at maintaining the current level of medical radioisotopes supply.
Foratom urges investment policy planning for low-carbon technologies

European nuclear trade association Foratom has released its Investment Framework Task Force Report urging investment policy planning for low-carbon technologies such as nuclear power. This “is critical for driving investments in technologies which will help achieve the climate neutrality goals embedded in the European Green Deal,” it says. According to the 28-page report, the investment rating and the ability to attract debt for new projects have a central role to play in the process of financing new nuclear projects. In addition, multiple financing mechanisms are required to access a variety of sources of capital.
Key nuclear organisations demand recognition of nuclear as a low carbon energy

In a joint statement issued on 14 May, the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), European nuclear trade organisation Foratom, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF), the US Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the UK Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) and the World Nuclear Association (WNA) called for nuclear power to be recognised as a clean, low carbon energy source.
Foratom promotes the role of nuclear in hydrogen production

European nuclear trade association Foratom on 4 May released a position paper on nuclear’s role in the generation of low-carbon and hydrogen. “The EU has set itself the very ambitious target of decarbonising its economy by 2050. Achieving this will require a massive transformation of the energy, industry, transport and building sectors”, said Yves Desbazeille, Foratom Director General. “Hydrogen is one of the technologies which could help Europe reach its goals. But two challenges remain: producing real low-carbon hydrogen and expanding its use to a broad range of energy intensive sectors that need it.”
Nuclear industry urges climate leaders to consider nuclear power

Ahead of the US-led climate summit on 22-23 April, nuclear industry organisations issued a press statement urging the inclusion of nuclear power in those discussions. The statement was issued jointly by Canadian Nuclear Association, European nuclear trade association Foratom, Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, the US Nuclear Energy Institute, the UK Nuclear Industry Association and the World Nuclear Association.
EC indicates nuclear will be added to EU Taxonomy

In a communication on 21 April, the European Commission (EC) effectively made a number of amendments to the EU Taxonomy Regulation, which entered into force in July 2020, signalling the inclusion in the taxonomy of nuclear energy. This followed significant pressure from the nuclear industry and NGOs as well as a report from the EC’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) which found no evidence that nuclear energy does more harm to human health or to the environment than other electricity production technologies already included in the Taxonomy.
EC’s JRC says nuclear “does no significant harm”

A Science for Policy report by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, dated 19 March, has concluded that nuclear is no more harmful to human health or to the environment than any other energy technology considered to be sustainable. The 397-page report, which according to European nuclear trade association Foratom, was “leaked” to the press, “aims to provide evidence-based scientific support to the European policymaking process”. It notes that “the scientific output expressed does not imply a policy position of the European Commission”. The report, titled “Technical assessment of nuclear energy with respect to the ‘do no significant harm’ criteria of Regulation (EU) 2020/852 (‘Taxonomy Regulation’), is designated “sensitive”. The assessment was conducted by JRC, whose mission is to support EU policies with independent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle.
UKSMR consortium joins Foratom

The UKSMR consortium led by Rolls-Royce said on 15 March that it had joined European nuclear trade association Foratom, “as it develops its global reach and eyes a vibrant export market”. The UKSMR consortium is designing a low-cost factory built small modular reactor (SMR).
