EBRD’s Energy Sector Strategy ignores nuclear

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has released its Energy Sector Strategy 2024-28. EBRD says it “prioritises the urgent need to accelerate the decarbonisation of energy through scaling up renewables, enhancing grids and storage, promoting zero-carbon fuels and phasing out unabated fossil fuels.

France and Germany move towards resolving nuclear differences

The European Union (EU) Energy Council, meeting in Luxembourg, have reached agreement on reforming the EU electricity market, resolving the long-running dispute between France and Germany over the role of nuclear power. France has welcomed a decision that nuclear power should be included in future state-supported models, while Germany insisted that this must not lead to unfair competition through publicly funding ageing reactors abroad. The proposal now moves on to the European Parliament, where concessions on nuclear and coal power could still meet opposition.

EU parliament supports 'green' label for gas, nuclear investments

The European Parliament has voted in favour of European Union (EU) rules labelling investments in gas and nuclear power as climate-friendly. Of the 639 lawmakers that voted, 278 supported a motion to block the EU gas and nuclear rules, while 328 opposed the motion, and 33 abstained. This fell short of the majority of 353 of the Parliament's total 705 lawmakers, which was required for the motion to be approved. The rules will apply from 2023, unless 20 of the EU's 27 member states in the European Council reject them.

Contract awarded for new Pallas reactor

The new Pallas research reactor, which will replace the High Flux Reactor (HFR) at Petten in the Netherlands, will be designed and constructed by the Ichos consortium comprising Argentinean nuclear technology firm Invap, together with Croonwolter&dros and Mobilis, both part of TBI Holdings of the Netherlands.
