Site preparation is underway for Canada’s first grid-scale small modular reactor (SMR) at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington nuclear site, with officials recently attending a ground-breaking ceremony. “With global businesses looking to expand in jurisdictions with clean and cost-effective electricity, small modular reactors will help compete for and attract more game-changing investments in Ontario’s economy,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford. “Our government is getting it done and building the future of nuclear energy right here in Ontario to support the needs of our growing province.”

First part of geological survey completed at Temelin SMR site

Czech energy company ČEZ has said that experts have examined the subsoil at the planned site for a small modular reactor (SMR) at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, a few hundred metres from the road linking Hluboká and Týn nad Vltavou. On-site experts determined the type and integrity of rocks by measuring electrical resistances and monitoring the rate of seismic wave propagation from a special vibrating source. They verified the first results using 30-metre-deep wells.

The Jamaican Government is looking to incorporate nuclear power in the country’s energy mix according to Minister of Science, Energy & Technology, Daryl Vaz. He added that it will be used as a medium to long-term option. “It is something that we believe that any country, like Jamaica, would have to think of for energy security, especially because it is [renewable],” Vaz said during a Heads of Science Round Table Discussion at the Ministry’s office in Kingston. He said the government “recognises the importance of science to nation building”, and that “it must become a way of life in Jamaica”.

Idaho resumes waste shipments to US WIPP facility

Shipments of nuclear waste from the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) site in eastern Idaho to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad in New Mexico have resumed following three episodes that caused New Mexico officials to suspend them. A DOE official has told Idaho officials that the New Mexico Environment Department had approved shipments from the 2,300 km2 site, which includes the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Tokamak Energy have signed a framework agreement to enable closer collaboration on developing spherical tokamaks as a route to commercial fusion energy. CNL said the CNRI programme continues to grow, and this year has expanded to accept applications from Canadian universities, who are invited to submit project ideas that fall within this round’s designated focus areas.

Brookfield says nuclear is a clean, safe and mature source of power

Canada-based global asset management company Brookfield has released a White Paper titled “A New Dawn for Nuclear Power”. It says the worldwide drive to net zero “is shining a spotlight on nuclear, a clean, safe and mature source of electricity generation”. Nuclear power “is also gaining more support from policymakers and investors given its ability to promote energy security and energy independence”. These trends are driving a global push to extend the lives and increase the capacity of existing plants, as well as build new reactors with state-of-the art designs and technologies.

Shelling causes more damage to Zaporizhzhia NPP

Renewed shelling in the early hours of 21 September at the site of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) damaged cables providing electricity to one of its six units, temporarily forcing the reactor to rely on emergency diesel generators for the power it needs for essential safety functions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was informed at the site by senior Ukrainian operating staff.

US DOE identifies coal plant sites that could convert to nuclear

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released a 127-page report, “Investigating Benefits and Challenges of Converting Retiring Coal Plants into Nuclear Plants”, identifying 157 retired coal plant sites and 237 operating coal plant sites as potential candidates for a coal-to-nuclear (C2N) transition. The study, conducted by Argonne National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, sponsored by DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy, said 80% of the identified plants were good candidates to host advanced small reactors.
