The new icebreaker will become the seventh vessel of project 22220 to be built at the enterprise of Rosatom’s Atomflot State Atomic Energy Agency. According to OSK, the laying of the vessel is scheduled for November 2025, launching for 2028, and transfer to the customer for December 2030.
The icebreaker was given the name Stalingrad in honour of the defence of the city of Stalingrad during World War II. The four Project 22220 icebreakers built by OSK now in service in the Arctic are Arktika, Sibir, Ural and Yakutia. The formal launch of Chukotka took place in November 2024.
