UK-based civil engineering firm Bilfinger said on 17 February that it had won a €68m ($73.5m) contract from EDF for the new Hinkley Point C nuclear plant in Somerset.  

The contract is expected to result in the creation of 35 new jobs in the UK, 24 of which will at the firm’s manufacturing plant in Humberside.

Bilfinger UK, Bilfinger Engineering & Technologies in Germany and Bilfinger Peters Engineering in France are involved in the project’s delivery. Work will begin immediately.

Under the contract, Bilfinger will provide execution design, pre-fabrication and supply of pipework for the ‘balance of plant’ package, which comprises 56km of piping systems.

These piping systems consist partly of steel and partly of glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) pipework.

Bilfinger CEO Tom Blades said: “The award of this first major contract by EDF marks a key milestone in our work on the Hinkley Point C project…. By combining the strengths and experience of multiple entities in our group, we are able to provide EDF with all the required services from a single source for this project.”

Bilfinger is already recognised as a strategic supplier to EDF’s Hinkley Point C project and, since 2018, has received contracts worth €20m for design preparation and planning work as well as solid waste treatment.

In November 2019, EDF reaffirmed its intention to award the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) contract to Bilfinger. This contract is expected to be awarded later this year, Bilfinger said. The company will be one of more than 300 Hinkley Point C suppliers.

"This contract will further boost the UK’s industrial skills and expertise in hi-tech manufacturing and is part of a sustained effort to boost British jobs and skills through the power station’s construction."
