China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation announced that its subsidiary, China Nuclear Industry 23 Construction Co Ltd (CNI23), has signed the contracts for the nuclear island installation project (Sections I and II) at units 3&4 of the Taishan NPP in Guangdong province.
The contract covers the installation of critical nuclear island equipment, including reactor pressure vessels, steam generators, and the primary pipelines, alongside the construction and commissioning of supporting engineering systems. Units 3&4), Phase II of the Taishan plant, will feature China’s indigenous third-generation 1,200 MWe Hualong One (HPR1000) pressurised water reactors.
Phase I featured two French-designed EPR-1750 (European Pressurised Reactor / Evolutionary Power Reactor). Unit 1 construction began in 2009 and unit 2 in 2010. They entered commercial service in 2018 and 2019 – a five-year delay from its original targeted timeline of 2013–2014.
The expansion was formally approved by China’s State Council in April 2025 as part of a broader domestic push to scale clean energy capacity. CNI23 brings extensive experience to the project, having previously handled the nuclear island installation for Phase I.
