Installation has been completed of the high pressure and low-pressure cylinders of the steam turbine for unit 3 of China’s Haiyang NPP in Shandong province, according to the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA).

The conventional island steam turbine consists of a high-pressure tank, three double-flow low-pressure tanks and ancillary equipment. Installation of the steam turbine cylinder is the most important and complicated task, CNEA said. “The process is complicated and involves a large number of components and high precision requirements. The successful completion of the work laid the groundwork for lubricating oil flushing and secondary circuit joint flushing of Unit 3.”

The Haiyang NPP hosts two AP1000 reactors (units 1&2) which entered commercial operation in 2018 and 2019. Two CAP1000 reactors (units 3&4) – the Chinese version of the Westinghouse AP1000 – are under construction. First concrete was poured for the nuclear island of Haiyang 3 in July 2022. This marked the official start of construction of the first of two CAP1000 pressurised water reactors planned as Phase II at the site. Construction of Haiyang 4 began in April 2023. The planned construction period is 56 months, with the two units scheduled to be fully operational in 2027.
