Former US Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham has been named as chairman of the board for French nuclear technology company Areva.
As non-executive chairman, Abraham “will be supporting Areva’s business expansion in North America.” The appointment became effective 1 March.
“[Areva’s] recent joint venture with Constellation Energy to establish UniStar Nuclear is an example of a unique concept for building the next generation of nuclear power plants in the US,” said Abraham, adding: “I look forward to continuing to support America’s push for energy security and energy independence.”
The news comes as Areva announces that all the group’s subsidiaries now share the same branding under the Areva name. Cogema becomes Areva NC and Framatome ANP becomes Areva NP. The new names also apply worldwide to all second-tier subsidiaries and facilities that contain “Cogema” or “Framatome ANP”.
