Russia state nuclear corporation Rosatom and Algeria’s Commissariat for Atomic Energy on 27 April signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The memorandum is aimed at developing specific forms of business cooperation between Russia and Algeria in energy and non-energy areas of application of peaceful nuclear energy. This includes: the possibility of joint implementation of the project construction of a NPP in Algeria using Russian technology; cooperation on the nuclear fuel cycle; Algeria’s involvement in experiments on using Russia’s MBIR research reactor; cooperation in the field of nuclear safety; and the training of Algerian students and specialists in Russian universities.
Other areas for further discussion and assessment include: the possibility of building a nuclear science and technology centre with a research reactor of Russian design; the construction of the complex for the production of isotopes for the Algerian industry; nuclear medicine centres, centres for the use of radiation to improve agriculture. The memorandum envisages joint development of a "road map" for Algeria’s peaceful nuclear programme, which will include the specification of projects of common interest to be implemented by joint working groups.
