Rosatom has hosted a ceremony marking the issuance of a licence for the operation of unit 2 of the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). The event was attended by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Alexander Trembitsky, Head of the Federal Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor). The licence is valid for 10 years.
Rostechnadzor’s confirmation of the safety of operation unit 2 records its compliance with the strict requirements of Russian norms and regulations in the field of nuclear energy use and paves the way for the future development of nuclear generation in the region. Trembitsky stressed that the plant had successfully passed all inspections, confirming the high level of safety.
The issue of a licence for ZNPP 2 is a planned stage in the station’s integration into the legal framework of the Russian Federation. Rostechnadzor has previously issued licences for the operation of radiation sources, the used nuclear fuel storage, as well as for unit 1 (in December 2025). Rosatom said these documents definitively consolidate the legal status of the plant as a Russian nuclear power facility.
Likhachev said in a statement: “Our goal remains unchanged – to prepare all units for future generation. We have already sent an application to Rostechnadzor for a licence to operate the nuclear installation of unit 6, and by the end of this year we plan to apply for licences for the remaining units 3,4 and 5.”
