During a meeting between Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev and the Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy, Almasadam Satkaliev, on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), an Indicative Roadmap was approved for the project to build a NPP in Kazakhstan. This included engineering and survey work, the conclusion of an EPC contract and the development of project documentation. The parties emphasised the importance of a speedy start in implementing the project.

Earlier in June, the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan, with the participation of international experts, selected Rosatom as general contractor for the construction of Kazakhstan’s first NPP. The plant will be built near the village of Ulken on Lake Balkhash,

Additionally, a framework agreement was signed at SPIEF between Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants (KNPP) and Atomstroyexport (Rosatom’s Engineering Division), which defines the key principles of cooperation for the implementation of the project.

We appreciate the confidence placed by the Kazakh side in leading an international consortium that will build a NPP in Kazakhstan,” said Likhachev. “Kazakhstan is our reliable historical partner in the nuclear industry. We are convinced that Russian nuclear technologies, which have proved their reliability, security and effectiveness, will serve the people of Kazakhstan, strengthening their energy sovereignty.”

Satkaliev construction of the NPP “is part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the sustainable development of the country’s energy sector”. He added: “We look forward to working closely and transparently with partners to ensure a high level of security and localisation of production.”
