Installation of the roof on the turbine hall has been completed at unit 2 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye. The operation took just over three months. The roof of the turbine hall consists of nine enlarged truss blocks with a total weight of 1142 tonnes. Each assembly, weighing 95-175 tonnes and 61 metres long, was undertaken simultaneously on two specially made stocks, and a heavy Liebherr 13000 crawler crane was used for installation.

The installation of the roof trusses in the turbine building required careful preparation, as well as a high level of organisation and construction planning, as each truss is installed within an accuracy of 10 millimetres.

“Installing roof trusses in a turbine hall is a complex task that requires a high degree of attention to detail and flawless execution,” explained Sergei Butskikh, First Deputy General Director of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC and Director of the Akkuyu NPP under construction. “Despite the strict schedule and difficult weather conditions, the team of builders successfully completed the task. We are proud of the results achieved and thank each employee for their diligence and professionalism. At the next stage, we will begin installing the main units and components of the turbogenerator unit.”

All work at the Akkuyu NPP construction site is carefully monitored by independent inspection organizations and the national regulator, the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK).

Akkuyu, Türkiye’s first NPP, will eventually host four Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors. The pouring of first concrete for unit 1 took place in April 2018, for unit 2 in June 2020, for unit 3 in March 2021, and for unit 4 in July 2022. Completion of unit 1 is expected in the third quarter of 2023. Rosatom is constructing the reactors according to a build-own-operate model. To date, the project is fully funded by the Russian side. However, Rosatom has the right to sell a share of up to 49% in the project to other investors.
