PSEG Nuclear has chosen Framatome ANP as strategic partner to improve performance at its Salem and Hope Creek plants.
Framatome ANP was already providing refuelling services for Salem (2X1100MWe PWR) and Hope Creek (1050MWe BWR). As strategic partner it will ultimately be involved in:
• Management of outage and inspection services.
• Outage optimisation and operations efficiency.
• Management of major capital projects.
• Fabrication of major new components.
Details of the partnership will be worked out in the coming months but it will include incentives linked to improvements in performance. Work will begin with the coming refuelling outages.
Siemens-Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) has been awarded a contract to provide upgraded steam turbines for the Salem 1 and 2.
It will take around four years to upgrade the turbines at Salem. The project will increase output by 90MWe. Both the high and low pressure elements of Salem 1 will be replaced during the early 2004 refuelling outage, and this is expected to increase output by 50MWe. The low-pressure elements of Salem 2 were previously replaced in 1996. The replacement of the high-pressure element will be completed in 2006 and is expected to provide an additional 40MWe.
• Meanwhile, Framatome ANP has been awarded a contract by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company for outage services at the Perry 1 nuclear plant.
The contract, covering spring outages in 2003 and 2005, will include reactor disassembly and reassembly, refuelling, in-vessel maintenance and inspections, control rod drive exchange and undervessel services.
