Work at the construction site of the Paks-II NPP in Hungary being built by Rosatom is proceeding on schedule in accordance with the approved timeline, according to Vitaly Polyanin, Vice-President of Atomstroyexport (Rosatom’s Engineering Division) and Director of the Paks-II project.
First concrete was poured for unit 1 of Hungary’s Paks-II expansion project (also known a Paks unit 5) in February. The Paks-II project was launched in 2014 by an inter-governmental agreement between Hungary and Russia for two VVER-1200 reactors (units 5&6) to be supplied by Rosatom. The contract was supported by a Russian state loan to finance the majority of the project. The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued the licence for the units in August 2022. In December 2024, Hungary’s National Atomic Energy Authority (OAH – Országos Atomenergia Hivatal) approved the preliminary safety report required for pouring first concrete for Paks II.
“We continue to implement the project strictly in accordance with the schedule approved by the Hungarian customer. Work at the construction site continues at unit 5, and we are preparing a working pit for unit 6. In parallel, a construction and installation base is being built,” Polyanin told reporters.
