The Hungarian parliament has voted to endorse plans to extend the operating lifetime of the Paks nuclear power plant by 20 years, and to develop a waste site in the country.
The resolution, acknowledges that extending Paks’ lifespan represents a solution for the long-term energy security of the country. However, while the government move supports the development in principle, parliament does not have the authority to approve a lifetime extension.
As part of the parliamentary measures, preparation works for the creation of low- and medium-level radioactive waste storage site at Bataapati, in southern Hungary, have also been approved.
