Orano US said on 24 August that it had delivered its first TN-LC® transport cask to a delegation from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), which operates 24 NPPs in South Korea and is diversifying its business into renewable energy and NPP decommissioning. The TN-LC final assembly and testing was conducted in Gunsan, South Korea at SeAH Besteel Nuclear Shop, Orano’s regional partner for the development of high-quality casks.

Han-gon Kim, President of KHNP-CRI (Central Research Institute), said, "KHNP is very pleased to receive this TN-LC through a good partnership with Orano. TN-LC will be utilised for safe transportation of the KHNP used fuel and newly developed fuel."

The TN-LC cask is intended for the secure transport of used nuclear fuel between KHNP sites, but will also be used for global transport services under the TN-LC’s international licences in the USA and other countries. The first use of the cask is planned by the end of 2021 for an international transport between South Korea and Sweden.

The TN-LC transport cask is designed for both wet and dry used fuel loading procedures. The use of advanced lightweight materials in its construction enable the TN-LC to be an efficient multi-modal transport cask while ensuring compliance for operations with primary nuclear energy facilities and research reactors around the world, Orano US noted.

In June, KHNP received a licence for the first TN-LC transport cask from South Korea’s regulatory agency, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), for the transport of high burn-up used nuclear fuel. Orano US said high burn-up fuel has been safely stored and transported worldwide for many years, including more than 15,000 high burn-up assemblies transported by Orano.

 Through its business subsidiaries Orano NPS and TN Americas, Orano has more than 55 years of experience providing nuclear packaging and transportation solutions for customers worldwide. Globally, Orano annually conducts more than 5,000 transports of used nuclear fuel and radioactive material packages.
