The transfer includes the general licence for Kewaunee’s used nuclear fuel storage facility. The Kewaunee nuclear plant is a pressurised water reactor located in Carlton, Wisconsin. It began operations in 1974 and was permanently shut down in May 2013.

Transfer of the fuel to the dry storage facility was completed in 2018.

Dominion and EnergySolutions requested the licence transfer in May 2021. The transaction would transfer the plant operator, Dominion Energy Kewaunee, to EnergySolutions, and rename it Kewaunee Solutions.

EnergySolutions has said it intends to begin active decontamination and demolition of the facility this year and complete decommissioning by 2030.

EnergySolutions is also decommissioning Three Mile Island 2 in Pennsylvania, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in Southern California and the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant in Nebraska.
