Two fatalities at Fukushima

21 January 2015

Two contractors have died in separate incidents while working at the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daiini nuclear power plants. There has also been another casualty at Tepco's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant.

On 19 January, at around 9:10am, Tepco reported that a contractor fell approximately 10 meters from the top of a rainwater receptacle tank that he had been inspecting at the Fukushima Daiichi site. The worker was transferred to the emergency room at the entrance control building at Fukushima Daiichi, and transported to Iwaki Kyoritsu Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately he died the next day.

In a separate incident at Fukushima Daiini on 20 January a worker died in hospital after being injured while inspecting apparatus within a radiation-controlled area at the units 1&2 waste treatment facility.

Tepco has offered condolences to the families of those affected. It said it will investigate the cause of the accidents in detail and will rededicate itself to future accident prevention.
