The end of Building 779

30 November 1999

Workers at Rocky Flats have successfully demolished Building 779, a plutonium handling facility on the Department of Energy Site. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson praised the work at an event to mark its successful completion on 1 November.

“The milestone we are witnessing here today, the largest demolition of a major plutonium facility anywhere in the United States, can be directly credited to the hard work and dedication of the workers at Rocky Flats,” he said.

Building 779 was a former weapons research and development laboratory containing 133 gloveboxes. Prior to demolition a complete survey confirmed all contamination had been removed.
