Swedish regulator approves dismantling of Oskarshamn 2

11 May 2018

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) on 4 May approved OKG Aktiebolag's (OKG’s) revised safety analysis report (SAR) on segmentation of the reactor internals and fuel boxes at Oskarshamn 2, which will allow OKG to begin dismantling the 638MWe boiling water reactor’s internal components.

Oskarshamn 2 has been permanently shut down since December 2016 after OKG's shareholders voted to close both Oskarshamn 1&2 citing concerns about their economic viability. In September 2017, the reactor entered the post-operation phase, and in December, OKG provided a complementary safety analysis report on the segmentation of the internals and fuel boxes.

However, SSM’s initial review of the report identified an issue which required additional information. OKG submitted an updated complementary safety analysis report, and radiological impact assessment in February and in March sent in the report on the decommissioning work package. SSM Inspector Martin Amft said OKG had supplemented its SAR on the post-operation phase “to a sufficient extent” and had systematically identified potential events in connection with segmentation of internal components. “Our overall conclusion is that OKG meets the requirements for a safety analysis report in connection with a dismantling project.”
