St Lucie receives licence renewal

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating licences of units 1 and 2 of the St Lucie plant for an additional 20 years. The plant is operated by Florida Power & Light (FPL).

FPL submitted its licence renewal application to the NRC on 29 November 2001. With the renewal, St Lucie 1 is licensed to operate until 1 March 2036, and unit 2 until 6 April 2043. A total of 18 units in the USA have now received 20-year licence renewals.

Meanwhile, the NRC has received 20-year renewal applications for the operating licences of Joseph M Farley units 1 and 2, operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company. The current licences expire on 25 June 2017, and 31 March 2021, for units 1 and 2 respectively.
