SNC-Lavalin wins inspection contract at Cernavoda

Cernavoda nuclear plant (Photo credit: SNN)Canada’s SNC-Lavalin announced that its subsidiary Candu Energy had won two contracts from Romania’s Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica to perform fuel channel and feeder assembly inspections at Cernavoda 1 during its 2020 maintenance outage.   

Cernavoda 1 is a 700MWe Candu pressurised heavy water reactor. Fuel channel inspections are part of periodic inspection activities at the unit.

Feeder assembly inspections involve SNC-Lavalin engineers and technicians performing ultrasonic inspection activities on major components.

Cernavoda 1 produces some 10% of Romania’s electricity. It was commissioned and began commercial full-power operation in December 1996.

As of the end of May 2020, Cernavoda 1 had generated some 133.1TWh of electricity.
