Simulator upgrade for China’s Ling Ao

20 February 2017

Canada’s L3 Mapps has been awarded a contract by China General Nuclear Power Corporation to upgrade the full scope operator training simulator for Phase II of the Lingao nuclear plant in Guangdong province.

The existing simulator will be equipped with L3’s latest Orchid simulation software and a severe accident simulation model. The new software will automatically switch from the standard L3 Mapps plant models to Electric Power Research Institute's Modular Accident Analysis Program.

The simulator will be used for training scenarios relating to degraded reactor core conditions, including fuel melting, cladding oxidation and hydrogen generation, vessel failure, containment failure and fission product release, the company said. The upgrade work is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018. Lingao Phase II comprises two domestic CPR-1000 pressurised water reactors (units 3 and 4), which began commercial operation in 2010 and 2011.
